Two Groton Grads Row for U.S. in World Championship

Henry Hoffstot ’09 and Alex Karwoski ’08—both standouts in crew while at Groton—are representing the United States at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam this week.
Alex is competing in the 2x, a boat with two rowers, each pulling two oars, and no coxswain. Alex rowed at Cornell University, and, according to U.S Rowing, finished 14th in the pair at the 2013 world championships and fourth in the four at the 2012 Under 23 contest. He also won the men's double sculls at the 2014 Senior 2 World Championships Trials, finished seventh in the pair at the 2014 National Selection Regatta 2, and won the pair at the 2013 World Championships Trials.

Henry rows in the 2+, a boat with two rowers, each with one oar, and a coxswain. “Henry has shown real persistence, rowing nonstop since leaving Groton,” says Bob Madden, who coached him at Groton. Henry was captain of the Georgetown University varsity heavyweight team from 2011-13 and, according to U.S. Rowing, won the pair with coxswain at the 2014 Senior I World Championship Trials. His sister, Maeve, graduated from Groton in 2013 and rows at Radcliffe.
