Groton School Celebrates Parents Weekend

Parents traveled from all over the world (and from right around the corner) to visit with their children, faculty members, and other famiiles during Groton’s Parents Weekend, October 17-19.

The colorful foliage provided a picturesque backdrop for a weekend full of activity. On the schedule were nearly 2,300 parent conferences—with teachers, dorm heads, and advisors—as well as a parent reception, a luncheon for international parents, a special dinner for Sixth Formers (seniors) and their parents, several athletic competitions, and a Saturday evening concert featuring student vocalists and instrumental ensembles.

On Saturday afternoon, Headmaster Temba Maqubela delivered the annual Parents Weekend address, sharing anecdotes about students and explaining some of his goals for the School as well as his continuing focus on inclusion. “Coming to this country as political refugees, inclusion to us is real,” said Maqubela, a native South African who was exiled for his political activism during the country's apartheid era.

The Maqubelas are among many who contribute to the global nature of the Groton community. For Parents Weekend, Groton parents arrived on the Circle from Australia, Botswana, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, and Thailand.

Visiting parents also represented much of the United States, including Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia.
