Groton Assistant Head to Lead Brewster Academy

Groton congratulates Assistant Head of School Craig Gemmell, who has been appointed the new head of Brewster Academy.

Mr. Gemmell has contributed in numerous ways during his 20 years at Groton. He was named assistant head in 2012 and, in that role, has overseen a review of the academic program and managed the Schoolhouse expansion and renovation.

A PhD in environmental science, Craig began at Groton as a science teacher, and over the years taught biology, AP environmental science, and natural history. He directed Groton’s College Counseling Office for five years and was a college counselor for an additional four. Craig made an enormous impact on countless students—as a teacher, college counselor, cross country coach, dorm head, and advisor.

For Groton, this news has double impact. Craig’s wife, Nancy Hughes, has taught English at Groton for most of 20 years and headed the department, acted as dean of students, directed the service program, and coached soccer and lacrosse. She, too, has influenced countless lives on the Circle.

Craig and Nancy will remain at Groton through the end of the 2014-15 school year. Their Groton family wishes them happiness and success when they depart for Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.
