Impressive Groton Presence at Head of the Charles

From the Form of 1956 to the Form of 2015, Groton had an extensive presence at the Head of the Charles Regatta, October 17-18.
 
 
Michael Gates ’15, Hugh Cecil ’15, Simon Colloredo-Mansfeld ’15, William Popik ’15, and coxswain Rebecca Kimball ’15 placed 20th of 85 in the Men’s Youth Fours—Groton’s first entry in more than 20 years.

Catherine Crowley, a Groton physics teacher, placed 12 of 21 in the Women’s Club singles. And Charlie Hamlin, the boys varsity crew coach, raced in the Senior Masters Eight boat from Team Attager, which was 12 of 55 and won the Grand Master (over 60) division in that race.

Groton alumni were all over the water, including Alex Karwoski ’08, who rows for the USA national team; he competed in the Championship Eights, finishing fourth of 36. Ted Patton ’84, P’16 rowed with his 1987 USA teammates in the Senior Masters Eight, coming in fourth of 55.

Starting with our most recent graduates, following are some of the Grotonians who raced at the 2014 Head of the Charles: Maeve Hoffstot ‘13 stroked a Radcliffe crew to a fourth place of 34 in the Women’s Club Eights. Olivia Bono ’13 and Charlotte Berkowitz ’13 rowed for Dartmouth’s entry in the Women’s Club Eights, placing 10th overall. 

Taylor Maykranz ’11 and Emma Peabody ’12 rowed in the Tufts Club Eight, finishing 20th of 34 boats. Faith Richardson ’11 rowed in Princeton’s varsity boat and finished 10th of 34 in the Women’s Championship Eights, and Fabrizio Filho Giovannini ’11 rowed in the winning Princeton lightweight Varsity Eight. Gage Wells ’11 stroked the University of Virginia to a fourth-place finish of 44 in the Men’s Collegiate Eights.

From the Form of 2010, Liza MacEachern stroked the second place Lightweight Women's Eight for Radcliffe, and Robert Black ’10 won for Union Boat Club in the Men’s Club Fours. Henry Hoffstot ’09 rowed for the Cambridge University Boat Club in the Men’s Championship Fours, placing second overall. Alexandra Morss ’09 rowed for Princeton’s Fat Cat Rowing Club, placing 17th of 34 in the Women’s Club Eights, then rowed with her father, Steve Morss P’09, ’12, ’15, in the Director’s Challenge Parent/Child double scull. 

Henry Nuzum ’95 rowed with a Harvard alumni boat (Rude and Smooth), which placed 31st of 55 in the popular Senior Master’s Eight. Terry Harwood ’82 rowed in the Upper Valley RA (Hanover, NH) boat that was 18th of 55 in the Senior Master’s Eight.

Ruth Kennedy Sudduth ’79 rowed with Cambridge Boat Club in the Women’s Grand Masters Eights and finished 16th of 39. Bill Summerskill ’76 coxed a Princeton/Harvard alumni boat (under the name Hingham Harbor) in the Senior Master’s Eight, placing 25th of 55. Also in that boat was Mark Blasetti ’85.

Nason Hamlin ’64, one of the founders of rowing at Wesleyan, stroked the Founders of Wesleyan Crew in the Men’s Senior Master Eights. And finally, Henry Francis ’56 was 39th of 50 in the Senior Veterans Singles.
