Division Champions at High School Nationals
Groton School varsity squash players swept the national Division 3 championship over the weekend, with both girls and boys teams bringing home championship titles.
The boys had ended their regular season with a decisive win over perennially strong Nobles—a good omen heading into the High School National Championships in Connecticut, the largest junior squash tournament in the world.
After defeating Packer Collegiate, Tabor Academy, and Berkshire School, the Groton players headed into Sunday's final against a formidable team from Harrity-Lower Marion near Philadelphia. Coach Dave Prockop said the match-ups had looked close on paper, so he was not surprised when the score reached a nail-biting 3–3. But Tyler Weisberg ’22 came through, carrying the team across the finish line to clinch a 4–3 win and the division championship.
The Groton girls, coached by Mike Tootill, brought home their Division 3 championship trophy after decisive wins over Friends Central in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania and Hopkins School in New Haven, Connecticut, and then a closer 4–3 victory over over Conestoga High School, near Philadelphia.
Then, in a sweet finale, the Groton girls faced archrival St. Mark’s School. Groton had narrowly defeated St. Mark's in late January, and the Lions wanted revenge. The match was dramatic and intense, but Ambrey Hayes ’20 dominated the fifth game and clinched the title for Groton.
Congratulations to Groton's boys and girls varsity squash players and the coaches who inspire them!
