Groton Wins First Game in Europe

The Groton Boys' Varsity Ice Hockey team embarked on an unforgettable journey, playing their first international game at the iconic Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria. Facing off against the Villacher SV U20 team, one of the oldest and most storied programs in Austrian hockey history, the Zebras demonstrated grit, determination, and teamwork in an impressive 4-2 victory.
The game began with Villach taking an early 1-0 lead, but the Zebras quickly responded. Sixth-former Zach Baker showcased his poise under pressure, evening the score in the first period and setting the tone for the rest of the game.
The second period saw Groton seize control of the matchup. With the Zebras on the penalty kill, Owen Cronan turned adversity into opportunity, scoring a remarkable shorthanded goal with an assist from Nate Moons. This play electrified the team and gave Groton their first lead of the game. Nolan Wilson extended the advantage with a well-placed shot, assisted by KJ Ni, to give the Zebras a comfortable 3-1 lead. In the closing minutes of the period, Nate Moons further solidified Groton's dominance, making it 4-1 heading into the final frame.
Villach HC mounted a spirited comeback attempt in the third period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity to narrow the deficit to 4-2. However, Wes DiModica stood tall between the pipes, making several key saves to preserve the Zebras' lead and secure the victory.
