Cross-town rivalry!

Our JV scores have looked like shoot-outs, for the most part, and this afternoon was no different, except that we came out on the plus side, for our first win of the season. The excitement ran at a high level throughout the game as all urged on and cheered their teammates in this cross-town battle. The score suggests we were the better team, but though we were never behind, we were tied several times through the game, and the Lawrence goalie had some fabulous saves, as did our own Lena Aloise, who returned to the goal confidently after a number of days out of commission. Brisa Smith put the first tally on the board for the first goal of her Groton career; she followed with two more scores. Eliza Brooks ended a scoring drought with four goals. Apple Zhu put one on the board for her first of the season. Sunny Ma, from her position on defense, scored three times, with some coast to coast runs. Lauren Ash rounded out the total with a remarkable six goals. According to the Lawrence coach, her players recognized at one point that our top scorers were working to set up rookie Dayana Genis, and so they marked her so tightly she could not move! What a great level this is to coach, when, yes, we want to win, but the more significant aim is to have fun, to learn, and to love what we are doing each afternoon.
