Groton Library Chooses Book Plate Winner

Congratulations to Sixth Former John Donovan, who has won Groton's second annual library bookplate contest. His print (pictured) will be featured on the inside cover of all books purchased for Groton School's McCormick Library during the coming academic year.

Bookplates are placed inside books to identify them as part of a library's collection, explained Library Director Mark Melchior, and a long artistic tradition has developed around these images.

Art teacher Jennifer Ho, who oversaw the contest, described the winning work: "John's bookplate design is a testament to merging many worlds: historical and contemporary art with references to art nouveau and poster design. He has included snippets of details, the stark black-and-white contrast, block-print marks, selective font choice, and pieces of personal touch."

John's design will replace last year's winning image by Sophie Park '19. "I'm so glad to know that John's and Sophie's artwork has a place in the library's book collection," said Mr. Melchior. "It's a wonderful way for the impressions that our students make on our community to have a lasting presence."
