This past Valentine’s Day was extra sweet for Christina Scalese ’26, as she became the first player in Groton girls hockey history to reach 100 points in a career.
A native of West Boylston, MA, Christina grew up with an older brother who played hockey. She soon caught the bug herself, starting skating at age 2 and playing hockey at 5. She played on boys teams for most of her youth, switching to girls in eighth grade.
The Fourth Form center said Coach Tim LeRoy first mentioned the milestone earlier in the season, when she was around ninety points. She didn’t think much more about it until the historic game, a 6–1 away win at Brooks School.
“I forgot about it until the Brooks game, when my goalie came over and said, ‘I heard you’re at ninety-seven,’” Christina said. “I thought, ‘Wow, that’s really cool,’ and then, ‘All right, I have to get three points this game.’”
She called her shot, notching two assists before a goal late in the game gave her 100 points.
“There was only about a minute left, but we were already up,” she said. “I was really excited.”
While the points mark is an individual achievement, Coach LeRoy said that the entire team was pulling for Christina.
“We’re so proud of her accomplishment of hitting that special milestone,” he said. “The best thing about it was how excited her teammates were for her hitting that mark.”
Christina echoes that sentiment.
“We’re really close knit,” she said. “Everyone is super supportive of each other and the culture is really good.”
Christina and the rest of the Zebras now move on to the NEPSAC playoffs. A regular-season 17–5–2 record earned Groton the top seed in the small-school Dorothy Howard Tournament and a first-round bye. They’ll host fourth-seeded Millbrook School on Saturday, March 2, in a rematch of last year’s semifinal game. The puck drops at 2 p.m. in the O’Brien Rink.
The tournament finals are at Noble & Greenough School on Sunday, March 3, beginning at 11 a.m.
