Nice home win on the eve of the New Englands
As if on cue, the boys responded with a strong performance against an extremely talented Rivers team. They rose to the occasion, winning most every match, buoyed by claiming all three tie-breakers played.
The day started beautifully in doubles. #1 Trip Wight / Michael Lu, #2 Griffin Gura / Miles Zhang, #3 Husayn Ladha / Charlie Stubbs, and #4 Thaddaeus Flatz-Ehrfeld and Aryan Mago all won their matches, giving Groton the doubles point.
Singles was much closer at the beginning. Trip, Griffin, Michael won their first sets handily, while the battles were much closer with Husayn, Miles, and Thaddaeus. Fortunately, Thaddeaus won his first set. In the second set, Groton really settled in, winning the big points when it mattered. Trip took his second set and the match in a one-sided tiebreaker. Griffin won handily at #2. Michael was at his sharpest, notching a sparkling victory. Then it was comeback time for Husayn, who took the second set and then won the 10-point tiebreaker closely. Miles dropped straight sets. But Thaddaeus won his second set, also in a thrilling tie-breaker Final score: Groton 6 - Rivers 1. The icing on the cake featured the three wins in exhibition singles, played on the Groton clay, delivered by Charlie Stubbs, Aryan Mago and Varun Give.
Commented Coach Conner: "I was very pleased with the boys' tenacious spirit today. Rivers was quite strong, and this victory portends well for tomorrow and beyond." At 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Groton's indoor courts, #3 seed Groton takes on Exeter in the quarter-finals of the New England "Class A" Championships.
