Groton Takes Down Pomfret
Groton earned an impressive 5-3 victory over Pomfret, marking their second win during the 50th Anniversary Groton Lawrence Holiday Hockey Tournament on the campus of Groton School. The Zebras came out firing in the first period, with Rafael Aberbach opening the scoring just 1:48 into the game off assists from Owen Cronan and Connor Wig. Moments later, Zach Baker and Nate Moons added goals to give Groton a commanding 3-0 lead. Pomfret answered late in the first, but Groton extended their lead to 4-1 in the second with a goal from Owen Cronan.
Pomfret mounted a third-period comeback, narrowing the gap to 4-3, but Groton’s defense stayed composed. Angus Frew sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final minutes, while Wes DiModica delivered another strong performance in net to preserve the victory. This tournament, a cornerstone of Groton’s hockey tradition, was founded by longtime coach, teacher, and mentor Jon Choate in his early days of coaching. The milestone 50th anniversary highlighted Groton’s proud hockey history, and this win showcased the Zebras’ depth, teamwork, and determination.
