Groton Mourns Beloved Frank “Junie” O’Brien

The Groton community is remembering longtime teacher Frank “Junie” O’Brien, who died February 2 at age 92. Junie taught English at Groton from 1948 to 1980, but also made a profound impact on lives outside the classroom, taking on many roles throughout the years.

Junie was dorm master from 1948 to 1962; he coached varsity ice hockey for 20 years, varsity baseball for 26 years, and spent a few seasons coaching girls ice hockey. This revered member of the Groton community, whose name is on the O'Brien ice rink, also was Groton's first director of Development and Alumni Affairs, edited the Groton School Quarterly for a decade, and was assistant director of the Groton-Lowell Upward Bound program.

Honorary alumni and beloved mentors to many, Junie and his wife, Muffin, were honored guests each year at Reunion Weekend, attending multiple form dinners at the request of those whose lives they touched.

The family is planning a memorial service for February 11 at 11 a.m. in St. John’s Chapel at Groton School.
