Off Campus Learning: Spring Break Trips Take Students to India and France
Twenty-two Groton students and four faculty members immersed themselves in different cultures over spring break during School-sponsored trips to India and France.
Seven students and two faculty members visited India, where they spent time at two schools in Dehradun, in the foothills of the Himalayas. They attended classes, lived in dorms, and joined the local students in community service projects, including teaching English to children of the Bindal slum, which rebuilds its homes after every monsoon season. Groton students spent several days living with families in a modest village, without modern conveniences, but also trekked in the Himalayas, toured Delhi, went white water rafting on the Ganges, and visited the Taj Mahal.
Fifteen students, all taking French classes at Groton, traveled to France with two of their language teachers. They spent time at a school in the Loire Valley where one of Groton's teacher/chaperones used to teach, attended classes, and lived with families from the school, allowing plenty of time for cultural immersion and language practice. The group also enjoyed Paris and its requisite sightseeing.
Groton sponsors student trips focused on service, language immersion, and musical performance. This summer, students will head to Tanzania, Uganda, and Peru, while Groton's chamber orchestra will tour and perform in South Africa.
