A Half-Marathon for Hardy Winter Runners
Thirteen of Groton's winter runners ran the Hyannis Half-Marathon on Sunday, an exhilarating culmination to their winter term afternoon activity.
Alexis Ciambotti '14 placed third in her age group, and Dan MacDonald '14 and Nick Barry '16 also clocked impressive times. "But even kids who finished further back accomplished much just by running the race," said Coach Ted Goodrich.
Four days each week, throughout one of the harshest winters in memory, Groton's winter runners ran between four and ten miles, typically through the woods and frequently through the snow. Many of them ran additional days as well. The runners knew that they would have the chance to test their grit and stamina at term's end with this half-marathon on Cape Cod. In preparation for the half-marathon, they ran at least three ten-milers.
While camaraderie and a sense of accomplishment rewarded each runner as he or she crossed the finish line, the springlike weather was equally welcome. "It was the nicest day down there we’ve ever had, certainly better than last year," said Coach Goodrich. Last year, the coach and three hardy students drove through snow toward the Cape, where they ran the course in heavy rain.
