Groton celebrates 'Kai Day' followed by a big victory
Emotions were running high before the game even began as Groton celebrated the last home game for their only senior, Kai Volcy. Kai has meant so much to the Groton girls basketball program over the last 4 years and is a huge reason for the program's recent turnaround and she will be greatly missed.
As far as the game itself, Groton students and faculty packed the gym which proved to be a huge home court advantage over the visiting St. Mark's team. After a slow start Groton caught fire from the outside and turned the heat up on defense as they had several 1st half steals resulting in a 30-13 halftime lead. Groton picked up where it left off in the 2nd half and stretched the lead to 30 points at one point and coasted to a 60-40 win. The Groton school spirit was unmatched as every Groton basket, block, or steal was followed by load and enthusiastic celebration.
Meghan Carney '19 led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points followed by Alyna Baharozian '18 with 15, Lyndsey Toce '19 with 12, and in her last home game Kai Volcy '17 had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
The win clinched a playoff spot for the Groton girls for the first time in 8 years. They next take on another rival of theirs as they travel down the road to take on Lawrence Academy.
