Groton Boys Tennis Tops Tournament
Groton's boys tennis team won the Kingswood-Oxford tournament in West Hartford, Connecticut April 6–7, besting talent from Choate, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Kingswood-Oxford, Lawrenceville, Westminster, and William Hall High School. A nail-biter till the end, Groton clinched the title by one point in the final match.
Groton and Lawrenceville had been neck and neck throughout the weekend. Schools play four singles in four separate draws as well as two doubles contests. With only two matches left—the #2 and #1 doubles finals—Groton was three points behind Lawrenceville. After Third Formers Jared Gura and Ben Jones quickly dispatched their Westminster opponents in straight sets, all eyes fell to the final match of the tournament: Groton vs. Lawrenceville in #1 doubles. Matt Kandel '20 and Powers Trigg '20 played dazzling tennis, narrowly winning the first set 7–6 in a tie-breaker before taking the second set, 6–4.
"The boys dug deep to play amazing points when it mattered the most," said Coach John Conner. "They believed in themselves and in their teammates. It was a true team effort."
After the final point, the boys rushed the courts and prepared to bring home the championship bowl
—again. The tournament began in 1973 but Groton has participated for only three years. This was the Zebras' second consecutive win.
