Students Reach Out to Nearby Communities on Days of Service

On two days of service this fall, students engaged with the town of Groton and other nearby communities to weed, clean, sort, entertain, and otherwise reach beyond their everyday routine to lend a hand.

Fifth and Sixth Formers volunteered on a mid-September Monday, while Second, Third, and Fourth Formers devoted a Tuesday in October. Some students worked on campus and around the town of Groton, and others traveled as far as Grafton, Massachusetts for their service projects.

On campus and around the town of Groton, students cleaned up public parks, trails, gardens, roads, and the historical Moors Schoolhouse site. They played games with children at the Children’s Center and Seven Hills Pediatric Center, which serves patients with developmental disabilities. In addition, they socialized with residents and gave musical performances at assisted-living facilities in Groton and Ayer.

In Acton, students worked to beautify the town arboretum and volunteered at Household Goods, a donation center that provides furniture and other important items to families in need. In Lowell, students sorted donations at Merrimack Valley Food Bank, which serves food pantries and soup kitchens in the area. The students who traveled to Grafton, about forty miles away, had the opportunity to volunteer at the Community Harvest Project, a farm that grows fresh produce for food-insecure households.

The days of service helped students reach out to the world beyond Groton and connect with their neighbors, an important learning experience to accompany their academic work this fall.—Christopher Temerson
