All-State Musicians to Play Symphony Hall
Congratulations to Derek Chang ’20 and Allison Jiang ’22, who have earned spots in the Massachusetts All-State Orchestra after two rounds of competitive auditions. Derek and Allison, both violinists, will perform at Boston's Symphony Hall on March 7.
They earned this musical distinction with a beautiful version of the first and second movements of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 during their audition. Both have have been perfecting their talent for years—Derek began violin lessons at age five and Allison at age four.
The Groton community is fortunate to have many opportunities to hear these young virtuosos, who play in various ensembles on campus. “I play in Groton's chamber orchestra alongside Derek,” said Allison, “and I also participate in a select chamber music class here on campus, where Groton's student musicians join to form smaller ensembles. Last year, I was in a string quartet, and this year I am playing in a piano trio and a violin duet.”
Allison relished the chance to compete. “I used to play in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, but it has been a while since I have had a more vigorous and challenging orchestral experience,” she said. “Joining the All-State Festival will be an amazing learning opportunity to meet fellow student musicians and esteemed professionals.”
Both students are familiar with playing in grand musical venues: they each played at Carnegie Hall last year, after earning medals in the Golden Classical Music Awards. While Allison looks forward to her first moment at Boston's Symphony Hall, for Derek it will be familiar, for he has made All-State for the past four years. “The grandeur of the hall itself, along with the orchestra,” he said, “make for an incredible musical moment.”
