Groton Thinks Globally at Harvard Model UN
Thirteen Groton students traveled to Boston in early February to participate in the 2020 Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN) conference, perhaps the largest and best of the nation’s Model UN conferences for high school students.
Seven Groton students new to Model UN conferences represented Bangladesh and Suriname on committees for the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). More experienced Groton students participated in Specialized Agencies, smaller committees on which students dig deeper into complex issues and global challenges, some of them based on historical scenarios.
For example, Fourth Former Jacinta Lopez-Guzman worked on her diplomacy skills while representing France in a simulation of the Treaty of Versailles (1919). Meanwhile, on the Pirate Confederation of Ching Shih (dating to the early 19th century), Fifth Former Zoe Park, in her capacity as “Master of Discipline,” succeeded in positioning herself as future leader of the pirate fleet, in part by arranging for the (mock) execution of two rivals!
As during recent years, this year’s delegation of Groton students to HMUN, which is run entirely by Harvard undergraduates, stretched their creativity and leadership in new directions while working with many of the more than four thousand students from all over the world who attend the annual conference.—Amanda Reichenbach and Tommy Lamont, Model UN Faculty Advisors
