Good Loss!
Having just come out of a long weekend break, the Groton team needed to lean into today's challenging match in order to prepare for this weekend's High School Nationals. It was especially nice for our final regular-season match to take place on our home courts and the Groton players rose to the occasion.
In the first round of play, Nobles showed their expected strength but the Groton team was ready. Trip Wight and Theo Zhang made big gains from their first games to their second, as did Samuel Lu and William Laws, both of whom won their second games to reach 1 - 1 ties. The other three eventually ceded to strong opponents, but not without working hard to earn their share of control, while Laws went on to win, 3 - 1, over a potentially formidable opponent.
The second round brought more focused effort and solid squash from the Groton players. Although Arthur Murray, Yanbo Pei, and Carter Lightburn did not win games, they played high-quality points and made their polished opponents earn their victories. The sams can be said for Hansen Zheng, who took his second game but ultimately could not keep his capable opponent at bay.
The team match ended in dramatic fashion as Jamie Abramson and his opponent worked through good, long points in the last match on court. With a great crowd cheering them on, these two went back and forth for four and a half games before Abramson developed a lead in the fifth and then held on to win, 11 - 9.
After showing great improvement from week to week throughout the regular season, the Groton team is on to High School Nationals!
