Groton Shocks Governor’s with Thrilling Comeback Victory

In a nail-biting match on Saturday, the Groton School boys' varsity hockey team mounted a stunning come-from-behind win against Governor’s Academy, winning 7-4 after being down for much of the first half of the game.

The action started early, with Governor’s Brodie Donovan striking just 26 seconds into the first period. Groton quickly responded as Davis Jamison, assisted by Angus Miller and Cam Cirone, found the back of the net at 1:24. Donovan struck again at 4:38, putting Governor’s back on top, but Groton’s Alejandro Hassan evened the score with a power-play goal at 7:33, assisted by Bruce Li and Elliot Wood. Governor’s didn’t let up, as Ian Crowley capitalized on a power-play opportunity at 12:59, and Robbie Daley extended their lead to 4-2 at 15:47 to close out the first period.

After a rocky start, Groton came out determined in the second period. Zach Baker reignited the team’s momentum with a goal at 12:13, assisted by Nate Moons and Connor Wig, bringing Groton within one.
The third period belonged entirely to Groton. Rafael Aberbach tied the game at 4-4 just 4:35 into the period, with help from Elliot Wood and Nolan Wilson. Minutes later, Hassan put Groton ahead for the first time with another power-play goal at 7:41, assisted by Aberbach and Li. Zach Baker then cemented his standout performance with back-to-back goals: a clutch tally at 11:04 (assisted by Moons and KJ Ni) and an empty-net goal in the final seconds at 17:57, assisted by Moons and Hassan.

Wes DiModica stood tall in net for Groton, stopping 24 of 28 shots, while Governor’s goaltender Timmy Heaslip made 26 saves on 32 shots.

The victory was a testament to Groton’s resilience and teamwork, as they rallied from a two-goal deficit to secure the win. Zach Baker’s hat trick and Alejandro Hassan’s two-goal performance highlighted a dynamic offensive effort, while the defensive unit and DiModica held strong under pressure. This thrilling comeback is sure to give Groton momentum as they head into their next matchup on Friday evening with a 5:30pm home match-up against Pingree School.
