An overtime barnburner!
This team proves with each game that it is getting better and better. Middlesex brought a vocal and talented JV squad to the Pratt Rink, and the energy level was high on both sides of the ice. On the bench, the Groton girls worked successfully to match the decibel level of the opposition in an effort to ramp up the excitement on the ice, and all took their turns, both as members of the cheering squad and as players on the ice! The defense played solidly as well as making numerous rushes up the ice, and the forwards worked hard to generate offense and fought back when defense was needed. Both goalies had some great saves. The score of the game went back and forth through the game, though we were down 3-4 at the end of the second period and at one point in the third period behind by two. When the clock ran out, the score was 6-6. Normally we don’t pay overtime in JV games, but no one was pushing the girls off the ice. Three Middlesex players raced over to plead, “Can’t we please play overtime? This is our last hockey game EVER!” The refs agreed - 5-minutes, sudden death, or rather, victory. For more than two minutes the play went back and forth until Lauren Ash, playing her best and most consistent game this season, found the back of the net (for the fourth time today). The Groton girls poured of the bench to congratulate each other for winning and for having come from behind. Saturday we host St. Mark’s for the final game of the season.
