Groton's track and field team is made up of individuals who strive to achieve their personal best. The team trains and competes on the school's newly built Vuyelwa and Temba Maqubela Track and Field Complex and also regularly takes advantage of Groton's acreage and surrounding trails. The team has a mix of field and running athletes. An ongoing joke among participants is that they belong not to a track team but to a "track family." The team competes in the ISTA (Independent School Track Association) and New England Prep School Track Association (NEPSTA) Division III.
Award-winning track coach Jamie Lamoreaux became head coach of Groton’s track team in 2016, after more than two decades coaching track at nearby Ayer High School. He also coaches football at Groton. At Ayer, his team tallied fourteen league championships, were Class C champions four times, Class C runners-up twice, and won the Central Massachusetts All Class Championship in 2007. He also coached indoor track, leading his team to a championship win in 2017.
Coach Lamoreaux brings to Groton the enthusiasm that led to his many awards, including the 2017 Massachusetts Stats Track and Field Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award, the 2013 Master Sports Life Time Achievement Award, the 2007 Massachusetts State Track and Field Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award, three awards from local newspapers, and membership in the Ayer High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
