Groton's boys varsity basketball team competes in the competitive Independent School League (ISL), composed of sixteen New England preparatory schools. The program, which has sent students to play at various NESCAC and Ivy League schools, strives to develop strong student-athletes and to nurture those who would like to play basketball beyond Groton.
Our team works extremely hard in practice and competes in games with the vigor and sportsmanship expected of a Groton athlete. If you are interested in learning more about the basketball program, please contact Coach Harold Francis at 978-448-7247 or hfrancis@groton.org.
Harold Francis, head basketball coach, assistant athletic director, and teacher, joined Groton in 2013 after six years teaching and serving as an assistant coach at Buckingham Browne & Nichols, where he became familiar with the level of play within the Independent School League. Before that, Coach Francis spent three years as head coach at Boston Collegiate Charter School in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where he led the school to three consecutive playoff appearances and was named Massachusetts Charter School Athletic Organization Basketball Coach of the Year.
Originally from Queens, New York, Coach Francis played football and basketball at the Taft School, then went on to play football at Hobart College. He has worked at numerous basketball camps throughout the country, including the Coach K Duke Basketball Camp and Hoop Mountain. He earned a master's in sports leadership from Northeastern University. Besides being assistant athletic director and coaching basketball, he also coaches football and teaches history at Groton.
Coach Joe Collins is a graduate of the Form of 2018. At Groton, Joe was a three sport varsity athlete in football, basketball, and lacrosse. In basketball, Joe was ALL- ISL in three of his four years and tri-captain his Sixth Form year. He holds the all time scoring record at Groton with 1,163 points. After Groton, Joe competed collegiately at Bates College and was a member of the varsity basketball team for four years. We are lucky to have Joe back here on the Circle.
