Every December, Groton puts on three Lessons & Carols services for the community, parents and alumni, and students. Preparation for these services begins months in advance. The orchestra dedicates much of the fall to rehearsing various holiday pieces for the prelude of the service. The chapel is filled with large wreaths, poinsettias, and incense.
Lessons & Carols is a great opportunity for members of the community to become involved in the life of the church. Acolyting spots are often given to younger students, and everyone is invited to be an active member of the service. Throughout all three of my years, I have had vastly different roles in the Lessons & Carols services. Third form year, I was one of the younger students who found his role in the church through carrying a torch as an acolyte. Fourth Form, I played in the orchestra. Fifth Form, I am playing in the orchestra and leading the procession as a verger. Lessons & Carols is a sacred tradition that many students look forward to each holiday season. It allows students to further their involvement in the church and deepen their understanding of the Christmas story. And if you are not interested in participating, you are invited to sit back and enjoy a wonderful display of music and tradition.
